Homegrown Colour Ltd. is a new botanical textile dye producer currently pioneering the commercial upscale of British indigo from organic woad. The collaboration between natural dyer and founder of the Northern England Fibreshed (NEF), Justine Aldersey-Williams and organic farm inspector and NEF coordinator, Mark Palmer, emerged in response to the increasing need for renewable textile dyes in the U.K. They grow with a large organic farm in North Yorkshire and their woad is verified Climate Beneficialâ„¢ – their leaf waste even helps power the National Grid as the farm generate energy using an anaerobic digester.
Their trial crop pigment was soft-launched on the Fibreshed U.K. stand at the Groundswell Agricultural show in June 2024 and limited edition dye kits can be purchased via a waiting list on their website. They are working with an industrial dye factory integrating botanical dyes within their existing system and the team intend to expand into other colours enabling textile producers to access a full spectrum of ‘homegrown colours’ in the near future.
